Ways To End World Hunger >>>
Hunger is malnutrition affecting millions of people across regions and continents. Man has always been concerned for sufficient food for survival. Despite agricultural green revolution of late 20th century and agro-technological advancements of 21st century, over 815 million people around the globe are suffering from hunger. 14 million children under the age of five suffer from severe acute malnutrition. People die every day due to a lack of food while some die due to obesity and being overweight. Combating hunger is not only about intake of a particular amount of calories per day but it is also associated with nutritiously beneficial food. Therefore, the biggest challenge is to enhance the quality and quantity of food.
1. Improving Agriculture By Using Biotechnology
The nutritional properties of crops can be improved by using biotechnology in agriculture that includes genetic engineering, tissue culture technique, transgenic plants, etc. In this way, food production can be increased and improved quantitively and qualitatively like golden rice.
2. International Conferences on Poverty, Hunger, and Emerging Food
Awareness can be enhanced about hunger through international conferences. Agricultural researchers and experts from different universities should organize workshops and seminar and give novel solutions like vertical farming, rooftop, or indoor farming in the middle of cities that can solve world hunger problems. Experts say that vertical farming could feed up to 10 million people and there is no need for land.
3. Redistribution of Wealth
According to IMF (International Monetary Fund) the funding gap for achieving the Sustainable Development Goal number 2 i.e., Zero Hunger is at 300 to 400 billion dollars. The way to achieve this is that big corporations should be heavily taxed and money distribution should be done fairly. Most of the food is obtained from farming communities in Global South. Thus, Global south should develop a monetary settlement that repays financial debts and make itself more empowered and independent in its food production.
4. Discourage Big Corporates:
Big food manufacturing corporates that work in the farming communities of Global South largely work on a system of exploitation of farmers. Farmers are paid minimum wages and their livelihoods are greatly restricted because the enterprise owns their land and resources. Therefore, in case if their crop doesn’t do well, they become hand to mouth with scarce supply of food. Thus, extensive food supply chains run by massive corporates around the globe should be heavily monitored to minimize exploitation.
5. Promote Sustainable Farming
Sustainable farming can meet three goals i.e., environmental health, economic profitability, and end hunger. Farmers must meet the needs of people without compromising the ability of future generations. Help and support local farmers to produce organic crops and provide to underprivileged areas in a sustainable manner so that they don’t have to rely on food aid from foreign countries.
6. Urban Farming:
Urban farming empowers families to be self-sufficient. Growing vegetable gardens instead of grass in your home is a great way to have fresh nutritious vegetables. Moreover, this will provide a way to recycle kitchen waste.
7. Enhancing Crops With Biofortification
Biofortification means increasing the micronutrients of food by selective breeding, genetic modification, and the use of enriched fertilizers. Poor farmers grow crops like maize, rice, wheat, pearl millet, beans, and sweet potatoes with limited resources. These crops have fewer micronutrients like vitamins and iron. Micronutrient deficiencies can leave lifelong impacts on children. Therefore, biofortified crops including iron-rich beans, pearl millets, and vitamin enriched sweet potatoes should be grown.
8. Controlling Infestation and Crop Infection
Crops are extensively destroyed by pests and insects like locusts, and fungal invasions. Technological innovations such as aerial spraying should be employed to effectively control infestation.
9. Reducing Food Waste
More than 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted around the globe annually. This also waste freshwater equal to the annual flow of the Russian Volga River and produces 3.3 billion greenhouse gases. Everyone can play a role to save food and make it freely available in underdeveloped areas. Slogans should be created on social media for awareness all over the world.
10. Improving Food Storage Systems
This area requires much focus. Advanced storage facilities should be built along with rehabilitation of existing grain stores. Women groups should be supported around the world that dry food in the presence of sunlight. Sun dried fruits and vegetables preserve micronutrients and have a prolonged shelf life. Solar dryers are eco-friendly.
11. Supporting Hygiene and Sanitation
In underprivileged areas, people especially children have poor hygiene practices which make them susceptible to diarrhea, typhoid, hepatitis, and other waterborne illness. These diseases prevent them from absorbing nutrients, minerals, and vitamins obtained from food. Therefore, hygienic practices should be taught to children and provision of uncontaminated water for drinking and cooking should be ensured.
12. Access to Education
Education is a very strong weapon against hunger and poverty. Educated people have a better opportunity for jobs to increase their income and feed up their families easily. Free education and food for education programs are powerful steps in underdeveloped countries where students are given free food for coming to school. This life-saving step can help overcome malnutrition in children around the globe.
13. Social Change
Social issues such as war, pose a fundamental challenge to halting world hunger. Social change is an extremely hard step and do not happen overnight. Governments should be encouraged to focus on hunger and poverty and resolution of transboundary conflicts should be the utmost priority.
14. Detect Malnutrition
Volunteers, health workers, and other caregivers should conduct the survey and detect malnutrition children. When malnutrition is diagnosed earlier, treatment protocols are simpler and easy, and children can recover more quickly. Therefore, detection of malnutrition is a more effective step to control world hunger.
15. Treat Malnutrition
Ready to use therapeutic food (RUTF) also known as Plumpy nut has vitamins and minerals in easily digestible, calorie-rich, and ready-to-eat packets. These plumpy nuts packets should be provided to children for the treatment of malnutrition.
16. Good Governance
Local government and communities should work together and form policies that make it easier for people to access food for survival.
17. Empower Rural Girls With Farming Education
Free transportation, lunch for rural girls at farming schools is crucial for ending hunger. Throughout the world, it is women who provide education, housekeeping, and food production. When they are better educated, they can better take care of themselves and their communities and families. Another benefit is lesser infant mortality because of improvement in dietary habits.
18. Seeds and Skills For Women to Grow Vegetables
Women should be educated about top-quality seeds and given skills for growing vegetables. Women can earn money to prevent hunger in future generations.
19. Food Donation
Food donations from wealthy nations can control poverty in war-torn on struggling countries.
20. Livestock Farming
In rural areas, livestock farming is a great source of food and income. Livestock food resources such as eggs, milk, butter are key sources of protein and minerals for families. Livestock gives economic safety during a crucial time such as climate change, conflict means non-market.
21. Access to Global Logistics and Market
Fund the infrastructure to give the poorest communities easy access to global logistics and markets.
22. Relocate People From Rich Areas to Poorer Neighbourhoods
Permanent relocation of rich city dwellers should be promoted to the poor cities. The intrusion of resources from rich people into the poorer neighborhoods may help in its advancement and create jobs, improve law and order and safety.
23. Set An Appropriate Minimum Wage
Governments should promulgate strict laws on industries to provide a decent and appropriate minimum wage for labor and ensure its implementation to minimize exploitation. Empowering labor class will greatly help in ending hunger.
24. Structural Intervention
Distribution of land to landless and provision of school education to all is key in ending poverty and hunger.
25. Free Healthcare
Making healthcare affordable and accessible to all will help identify malnourishment and malnutrition. Diagnosis like these will help communities identify where to improve their diet and gain the absent nutrients.
